Quantum Tunneling

The tunneling of a wave function through a potential barrier is demonstrated by this program. The program allows the user to choose a potential energy barrier of a standard shape (square, triangular, or trapezoidal) or to create a potential barrier of arbitrary shape. The user can then change the height and/or width of the potential energy barrier, as well as the potential energy on the right hand side of the barrier.

Besides changing the potential energy diagram, the user can choose from a menu of standard particles (electron, proton, or pion) or can create her/his own particle of a particular mass, energy or de Broglie wavelength.

In addition to controlling the barrier and particle parameters, the program allows the user to simulate a totally hypothetical situation by altering the value of Planck's constant, and observing its effects on tunneling.

Depending upon the option chosen by the user, the program displays either the real or imaginary part of the wave function or the probability density function.
